May 24th thru Sept 7th, 2008 – Victorian Gardens Amusement Park for Children at Wollman Rink in Central Park

by Lucy Foster

During the summer months, the Wollman Rink in Central Park is transformed into Victorian Gardens, a traditional mini amusement park filled with hand crafted rides, classic concession stands, and interactive activities for children to enjoy. Since 2003, this family-friendly attraction is open thru the summer and has plenty of unique and colorful rides that adults can ride as well to accompany their children. The rides are situated in perfect locations to take in the many breathing views of the city as you twirl around in the colorful, unique rides. A family of four can try out the four passenger crop duster plane, that spins around at a decent height from the ground, or board the Buzz Jet, a collection of mini jets in need of pilots. They also have a 3–story fun slide that can be entertaining. Most of the rides are intended for children except perhaps the centerpiece attraction of Victorian Gardens which is the swing ride. The swing ride has full-sized adult swings as well as children-sized swings and can be fun for all. I had taken my cousin here and we had a fun time at this mini amusement park. Some simple prizes can be won at the game booths that are set up. It’s also a great place to videotape your child and get some humorous photos. The atmosphere of this amusement park is child-safe and is a nice early introduction to amusement parks. The admission fee varies but they do offer an unlimited ride wristband option for $18.50 weekdays and $21.50 weekends and holidays.
Victorian Gardens Amusement Park is located at the Wollman Rink in Central Park at Sixth Avenue at 59th street. Their phone number is 212-439-6900.
