The Museum of Modern Art also known as MoMA was founded in 1929 and is considered to have one of the largest collections of contempory/modern art to be found anywhere in the world. It is the home of such masterpieces as The Starry Night By Vincent van Gogh, Water Lilies by Claude Monet, and hundreds of other classic works of modern art. Within this landmark museum visitors become enchanted by a vast variety of modern art from sculpture, paintings, photography, drawings, architecture and design, prints, illustrated books, and film.
The Museum of Modern Art, reopened in 2004, and was redesigned by Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi, who incorporated more elements of light and the sense of the museums garden throughout. It is a more inviting open space that brings together the collections to match the new architectural elements. Visitors can stroll throughout the museum, which nearly double from its previous size, without feeling the artwork forced upon them. It’s no wonder that this museum is considered to be one of the most visited landmarks in the world.
The first time I visited this fantastic tourist attraction, I was amazed to find out that Water lilies by Claude Monet was really a huge piece at about 20 feet long and covered an entire museum wall. It was amazing to see this well known work in its full size. The Museum of Modern Art also has a very elegant restaurant called The Modern that got a three star review from the NY Times. Reservations are required for dining at The Modern. There are plenty of places to eat throughout this museum. On the second floor they have a Cafe 2 or there is Terrace 5 where you can get ice cream sundaes, cocktails, beer, or even wine! When dining at The Modern, you can get a beautiful view of The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. The museum can get crowded fast so coming early is a better time to enjoy your visit. The museum gift shop is also a fantastic place to pick up gifts and collectibles. The admission to the museum for adults is $20, seniors $16, students $12, and children are free. The Museum of Modern Art is located at 11 West 53rd Street, between 5th and 6th ave.
