The historic Tony award-winning revival Gypsy starring Patti Lupone is set to close as of January 11th, 2009. Originally, the hit production was scheduled to run until March 1, 2009 but in a statement from the producer Roger Berlind, the revival will be closing sooner than previously announced. “Though we originally announced that Gypsy would play its final performance on March 1, 2009, due to these uncertain financial times my partners and I have made the difficult decision to close instead on January 11, 2009”.
Gypsy will have been performed a total of 359 shows with 27 being previews, by the end of its run.
The production won 3 Tony awards for its leading stars: Patti LuPone, Laura Benanti and Boyd Gaines.
Some talk is still in the air that the last performance scheduled for January 11th, 2009 might be filmed for historic purposes.
Gypsy is currently playing at the St. James Theatre, located at 246 West 44th Street, in New York City. Tickets are still available for the remaining performances by visiting www.telecharge.com or by calling (212) 239-6200.
