American Artist Jeff Koons has three of his sculptures on special exhibit at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibit is the first time the three works have been on public display and will be available thru October 26, 2008 for viewing.
Artist Jeff Koons, finds his artistic inspiration from “the everyday world around him” and incorporates it into his contemporary creations. His work can be found in several museum collections and has become known for his oversized public sculptures that have been exhibited throughout New York City. Most New Yorkers might recall his giant Puppy sculpture that was on display in the year 2000 at Rockefeller Center just above the golden Prometheus statue overlooking the Channel Gardens. This current special exhibit of his work, he began in 1993, and is part of his “Celebration series”. The three large pieces on display are “Balloon Dog (Yellow)”, “Coloring Book”, and “Sacred Heart (Red/Gold)”.
The roof garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art lends a beautiful space with views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. The cafe serves beverages and sandwiches on the breezy terrace and on Fridays and Saturdays includes a Martini Bar between 5:30–8:30 pm.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located on 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street.

Macys 4th july fireworks metroway event new york city anniversary 150th

Every fourth of July, Macys puts on one of the worlds largest fireworks shows, lighting up the New York City skies. The annual tradition is celebrating their 32nd year of spectacular firework shows that have steadily improved each year becoming more elaborate than the previous year. The Macy’s fireworks show lasts for 30 minutes of spectacular splashes of colors and streaming firework lights. The Macy’s fireworks event begins at about 9:00 p.m. and will be televised on NBC for home viewers.
This year Macy’s fourth of July fireworks show will be the theme of American Dances and will also celebrate Macy’s 150th Birthday in a special dedication during the spectacular show. The theme of American Dances “will have the fireworks twist, hop, jump and sway to patriotic standards and classic dance themed tunes from our long history. Performed by The New York Pops under the direction of Rob Fisher, the score will feature such classics as Good Golly Miss Molly, The Twist, Save the Last Dance for Me, Rock Around the Clock, and the Tennessee Waltz. In addition, the score will also feature patriotic standards including The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America. Lending her talents to America Dances is pop music sensation Katherine McPhee, who will be the guest soloist on the sultry Save the Last Dance for Me. For the live show in New York City spectators are encouraged to tune in to radio station 1010 WINS to hear the score and get the full effect of the biggest fireworks display in America”, according to Macys.

Although there are several great spots to view the Macy’s fireworks show from, if you plan ahead you can experience the annual show in a much more pleasant, less crowded atmosphere. This year I made plans for the top of the Empire State Building where for about $75. you get to experience a great view in the company of about 150 other guests. Plus, a few snacks and drinks are nearby in the open bar for your convenience. Call ahead of time for this unique view at 212–736–3100.
Another interesting option would be to make reservations with The Circle Line Cruise. This 5 hour cruise costs about $ 165. but you get fantastic views, since it makes its way to the Statue of Liberty for the show. The atmosphere is very pleasant and includes entertainment and a dance floor plus a bar (cash only), and buffet spread.
The 32nd annual Macy’s fourth of July fireworks show will take place in the sky over the East River and viewers can see the display from Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens. For more complete locations for best viewing call the Macys fireworks hotline (212) 494-4495 or visit Macys online.
