American Photorealist artist Chuck Close was the honored guest at the annual fall Gala at the Whitney Museum of American Art on October 22, 2007. The Gala and Studio party was themed “Shades of Gray” and featured many of Chuck Close’s larger-than-life tapestry portraits and works, some shown together for the first time as a set. Some of the displayed tapestry portraits included Kate Moss, Renee Fleming, and composer Philip Glass. Meryl Streep had commented on his work “…I love the Renee Fleming one so much that I can hardly stand it”.
The event was co-chaired by Melva Bucksbaum, Amy Phelan, Meryl Streep and Don Gummer, and Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon. Over 450 guests helped to raise more than $2.4 million dollars making it one of the Museum’s most profitable fundraiser.meryl streep
The celebration started with a cocktail reception followed by a Gala dinner held in the Museum’s Emily Fisher Landau Galleries followed by the Studio Party in the Sculpture Court. Pianist Bruce Levingston, who arrived with the legendary Ford model Carmen Dell’Orifice (seen right), performed Philip Glass’s “A Musical Portrait of Chuck Close”.
The event was sponsored by the fashion house Akris, who outfitted some of the attending celebrities such as opera great Renee Fleming, Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen and Melva Bucksbaum.
Chuck Close’s works have been included in several museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Guggenheim Museum (NY), and the Tate Gallery (London). Recently Chuck Close had an exhibit “Chuck Close Philip Glass 40 Years” at Gallery Met at the Metropolitan Opera featuring 18 portraits that Chuck Close did of composer Philip Glass over a period of 40 years.
