For more than 35 years, the Met has displayed a blue spruce decorated with a collection of 18th-century Neapolitan angels and cherubs who gaze down upon the intricately carved crèche figures that surround its base. George Balanchines’s magical Nutcracker, with its mix of complex choreography and wondrous moments—an onstage snowstorm, an enormous Christmas tree, giant rats.
